BCH302 Chemical Engineering Fluid Mechanics Unit-Wise Syllabus

Unit 1: Hours Introduction · Fluid Statics

Hours Introduction: Fundamental concepts of fluids, Fluid statics, kinematics and dynamics, 1. Rheological properties of fluids. Fluid Statics: The basic equation of fluid statics, Pressure–depth relationship, Pressure forces on plane and curved surfaces, Buoyancy and stability, Forces on immersed and submerged bodies, Pressure measurements.

Unit 2: Fluid Dynamics · Dynamic Analysis of Flow

Fluid Dynamics: Lagrangian and Eulerian descriptions, Flow visualization–streamline, 2. pathline, streakline and timeline, profile plots, classification of fluid motions, Reynolds 10 transport theorem. Dynamic Analysis of Flow: control mass, control volume, conservation of mass, continuity, momentum theorem, linear and angular momentum, mass-momentum- kinetic energy balance, Eulers equation of motion, Bernoulli theorem, Navier-Stokes equations, tubular laminar flow and Hagen-Poiseuille equation.

Dimensional Analysis, Similitude and Modeling: Dimensional homogeneity and 3. analysis, Methods of finding dimensionless numbers, Selection of variables, Rayleigh 6 and Buckingham’s π method, Common dimensionless numbers and their physical significance, Model and Prototypes, Complete and incomplete similarity.

Unit 4: Internal Incompressible Viscous Flow · Pipe fittings and valves

Internal Incompressible Viscous Flow: General characteristics of pipe flow, laminar and 4. turbulent flow, entrance region and fully developed flow in pipe, shear stress distribution and velocity profiles, external flow, boundary layer concepts. Energy correction factors, Energy and hydraulic grade lines, major and minor losses in pipes, fittings, pipe network, friction factor, flow through fixed and fluidized beds. Flow Measurements in pipe and open channels: Flow rate and velocity measurement; Pitot tube, orifice meter, venture meter, rotameter, notches and weirs. Pipe fittings and valves: Schedule number, joints and fittings, different types of valves.

Unit 5: Fluid Handling Machinery

5. Fluid Handling Machinery: Classification, performance characteristics and sizing of 8 pumps, compressors, fans and blowers.
