Unit 1: Elements of weft knitting · Terms and Definitions used in knitting
Introduction to Knitting; Difference between woven, knitted and non-woven products and processes. Classification of knitting machines. Elements of weft knitting: needles, sinker and cam. Terms and Definitions used in knitting: 9 Wales, Courses, Face loop, Back loop, Stitch density, Pitch, Gauge, knit, Float & Tuck Stitches and their effects on fabrics. Some stitch notation.
Unit 2: Weft Knitting
Weft Knitting: types of knitting needle, Circular weft knitting machine and its mechanism. Knitting action of Latch needle and bearded Needle. Classification of weft knit structures and Properties of Plain, Rib, Interlock and Purl 9 structures, and its end uses.
Unit 3
Introduction and knitting element of warp knitting, concept of loop formation, swinging and shogging motion, warp knitting machine: tricot and Rachel warp knitting machine and their properties and applications.
Unit 4
Introduction to non-woven technology, classification of non-woven technology, Types of fibers used in non-woven fabric, Methods of web preparation, 9 Orientation of fibres in the web: Cross laid, parallel laid, Random laid.
Unit 5: Methods of bonding of web
Non-woven fabric properties influencing factors. effects of process a variables on properties of non-woven fabric. Methods of bonding of web: Needle Punching, Chemical Bonding, Thermal bonding, Spun laid technology & application of non-woven fabrics.

- Objectives:
- 1. To enable the students to learn about different knitted fabric structure and their properties.
- 2. To expose the students about the elements and mechanism of different types of knitting machines.
- 3. To expose the students about the classification of non-woven fabric.
- 4. To brief students about the different manufacturing methods of non-woven bonding.
- 5. To enable the students to learn about production method, application of non-woven.
