Unit 1: Fashioning Tradition, Handloom Fashion · Basic Design

Concept of Handloom Act, 1985, Handloom Mark, Geographical Indication (GI) of Handloom Products, Handloom brand. Fashioning Tradition, Handloom Fashion: Fashion, Definition, Fashion Terminology, Types, Fashion Cycle (Stages of Fashion). Basic Design: introduction, definition, types of design: structural & decorative, source of inspiration of design, elements of design, principle of design. Elements of handloom arts & Fashion.

Unit 2: Elements of Fashion illustration

Elements of Fashion illustration: Introduction to Fashion illustration – Eight and twelve head theory, History, importance, artists and illustrators of national and international repute. Elements of Design (point, line, form, shape, space, size, texture and colour), Principles of Design (harmony, proportion, balance, rhythm and emphasis).

Unit 3

Colour Theory (CIE lab colour system, Pantone Colours, colour wheel, colour value scale, grey scale, colour schemes, colour psychology, colour and emotions, Indian approach to colour). Definition of Embroidery, Embroidery kits, tools, & Equipments for embroidery.

Unit 4: Regional embroidery

Basics Stitches of hand embroidery (running stitch, backstitch, split stitch, stem stitch, satin stitch, herringbone and French knots), m/c embroidery, computerized embroidery. Regional embroidery: Study of motifs, fabrics, colour threads, stitches used for design in Indian state of Traditional embroidery (Chikankari, phulkari, Kantha, Chandua, banjaara.) Concise Introduction of Aari Work & Zardozi Work.

Unit 5: Some Special Surface Ornamentation

Some Special Surface Ornamentation: Gold and Silver thread work – Materials and Methods used, Mirror Work, Raised Work Appliqué, Quilting, Patch Work, Tapestry weaving: Principles, appliances and materials, bobbins & needles, Comb, embroidery frames treated as a loom.
