Unit 1: Introduction · Concepts of

Introduction: Definitions of: Textile Fiber, staple, filament, coarser & finer fiber, monomer, polymer, and co-polymer. Classification of Textile Fibers; Essential & Desirable Properties of Textile Fibers; Advantages & Disadvantages of Natural and Manmade Fibers. Concepts of: Molecular Weight, Degree of Polymerization, Orientation and Crystallinity, Characteristics of Fiber Forming Polymer.

Unit 2: Natural Cellulosic Fibers

Natural Cellulosic Fibers: Cotton- Introduction, Morphology, Polymer System, Physical and Chemical Properties, and its Applications. Jute- Retting and Fiber Extraction Process, Properties of Jute Fiber and its Applications, Flax- Extraction Process, Properties of Flex Fiber and Applications. Banana- Physical, chemical characteristics and its Applications. Mudar- Introduction, Properties and its Applications.

Unit 3: Protein fibers

Protein fibers: Silk- Verities of Silk, Life Cycle of Silk worm, Structure of Silk Fiber and its Characteristics, Silk Polymer System, Chemical and Physical Properties of Silk and its Applications. Wool - Morphology, Polymer System, Complex Structure of Wool, Chemical and Physical Properties of wool and its Applications.

Unit 4: Manmade Fiber Production Techniques · Regenerated Fibers

Manmade Fiber Production Techniques: Principle of Manmade Fiber Production, Wet Spinning, Dry Spinning, Melt Spinning. Regenerated Fibers: Viscose- Manufacturing Process, Microscopic Appearance of Viscose, Polymer System, Physical, Thermal, Chemical properties and its Applications. Lyocell- Manufacturing Process, Physical, Thermal, Chemical Properties and its Applications. Cuprammonium & Polynosic- Manufacturing Process, Physical, Thermal, Chemical Properties and its Applications.

Unit 5: Synthetic Fibers · Outcomes

Synthetic Fibers: Polyester, Nylon-6 & Nylon-66, Acrylic- Manufacturing Process, Polymer System, Fiber Morphology, Chemical, Physical, Thermal Properties and its Applications. High Performance Fibers- Introduction and Application of Aramid, Nomex, Kevlar and Teflon Fiber. Post Spinning Operations- Drawing, Heat Setting and Texturing. Recent Development in Polymeric High Performance Fibers. Outcomes: Upon completion of the course, the students will be able: - 1. To know about the classification and molecular structurer of Textile Fiber. 2. To know about the concept of different cellulo4sic fibers and their properties. 3. To know about different protein fibers, their properties and applications. 4. To know about different regenerated fibers, their properties and applications. 5. To know about the production techniques of different Synthetic Fibers, their properties and applications.
