BHT502 Chemical Processing of Textiles-II Unit-Wise Syllabus

Unit 1: Dye-fibre interactions · Terminologies used in dyeing · Assessment of colour fastness
Introduction to colouring materials. Definition and classification of colouring materials: Dyes, pigments and lakes. Dye-fibre interactions: physical, chemical, solid-solid and mechanical interactions. Terminologies used in dyeing: Affinity, substantivity, exhaustion, fixation, percentage of shade, expression. Assessment of colour fastness: Colour fastness to washing, light, rubbing & perspiration.
Unit 2
Dye bath assistant, chemical auxiliaries and process parameters such as temperature, pH, time and material to liquor ratio (M.L.R) in dyeing. Principles, recipe, dyeing mechanism and method of application of Direct, Reactive, Vat, Azoic, a n d Sulphur dyes on cellulosic fibre. Dyeing of regenerated fibres with viscose, model, and lyocel.
Unit 3: Dyeing of blends
Acid, Basic, Metal complex dyes on textile fibres (Nylon, silk, wool) with effect of process parameters and function of chemicals. Principles, recipe, dyeing mechanism and application of Disperse dyes on Polyester. Various methods of dyeing Polyester such as Carrier, High temperature, High Pressure and thermosol dyeing. Dyeing of blends: Polyester/Cotton, Polyester/Viscose and Polyester/Wool.
Unit 4: Styles of printing · After treatments in printing
Introduction to Printing. Difference between dyeing and printing. Ingredients in the print paste, Brief introduction to methods of printing: Block and screen printing by hand, semi-automatic and fully automatic flatbed screen printing, rotary screen printing. Styles of printing: Direct, discharge and resist style. Printing process with Direct, Reactive, and Acid dyes. After treatments in printing: Steaming and curing.
Unit 5
Objective of textile finishing, Classification of finishing processes, Mechanical and chemical finishes. Brief introduction to mechanical finishing: Calendaring and sanforizing. Brief introduction to chemical finishing processes: Crease proofing, softening and stiffening, flame retardant, water proof & water repellent finishing.
